Balmorhea are one of the standard-bearers for Austin’s resurgent post-rock scene. Heavily influenced by the likes of Rachel’s and Jim O’Rourke, the bands in this movement make music of cinematic sweep—often scoring actual films live—and are likely to touch the electric guitar only rarely.The foundations of Balmorhea’s records are piano and acoustic guitar, performed by founders Michael Muller and Rob Lowe (not, in fact, the erstwhile Brat Pack heartthrob), and the band builds on those with strings, percussion, the odd banjo, and found sound (like a typewriter featured on their 2007 eponymous debut). 2009’s All Is Wild, All Is Silent was a glowing, imaginative work of historical fiction, delivered improbably by an instrumental chamber ensemble. Constellations, which dropped in early 2010, was a more subdued and contemplative work that garnered cross-country underground acclaim, in large part due to a heavy touring schedule and aggressive support from Austin-based label and experimental specialists Western Vinyl.
