Devendra Banhart and the Grogs

Avant-folk borne out of Houston? Perhaps not the most likely story, but it is Devendra Banhart’s. The singer-songwriter broke on the scene with his debut, Oh Me Oh My, on the Young God label in 2002, but he’d dabbled in art and music for years prior. When Banhart was still a child, he moved with his mother from Houston to her native Venezuela, and ended up in the Los Angeles area in his teens. He studied for a while at the San Francisco Art Institute, but dropped out in favor of busking around the world.
He’s been compared to musicians like Tim Buckley and Pink Floyd’s Syd Barrett, but without their troubled histories. Banhart’s second two full-length records, Rejoicing in the Hands and Niño Rojo, came out in 2004 to hearty critical acclaim. He jumped to the XL label for Cripple Crow, and remained with the label (which boasts Thom Yorke, M.I.A., Vampire Weekend and The White Stripes) for 2007’s Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon. The album made it to the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, and the song “Lover” was featured in the soundtrack to Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. In late 2009, Banhart made his major label debut on Warner/Reprise with What Will Be.
