The members of the mathematical rock quintet Foals come from Oxford, England, and have been playing together since 2005. Lead singer and guitarist Yannis Philippakis, guitarist Jimmy Smith and bassist Walter Gervers wear their guitar straps high, allowing them to show off their dexterous riffs across melodies that capture the band’s poppy, frenetic, post-punk sound. Rounded out by keyboardist Edwin Congreave and drummer Jack Bevan, the Foals’ band name is a play on the etymology of their front man’s last name. They released their first album, Antidotes, in 2008 and their sophomore effort, Total Life Forever, in the U.S. in May on the Sub Pop label, which was nominated for the UK's prestigious Mercury Music Prize. These guys are the biggest reason I am attending ACL this year. I've been in love with these guys for a while. The Antidotes album changed my musical mindset.word
Erick Greene , about 1 year agoThese guys have cool songs and I dig what they are doing, but "dexterous riffs" is a bit of a stretch. "Jaunty?" Maybe. "Angular?" Sure. "Dexterous?" Ehhh. Should be a good show, anyway. They have great energy.

Joshua Thom Avni , about 1 year agoActually, when Andrew Mears named the band, they had no idea what Philippakis meant. When Yannis called up his grandfather some time later and found out it meant "lover of horses", it was completely coincidental. But that doesn't matter. What matters is that I won't be there!
