Native Midwesterner Lissie Maurus has one of those voices that is a force of nature—it bellows out of her small frame, bursting through her like light and brightening the room around her, blanketing the listener in emotion. Maurus simply goes by her first name, and that straightforward presentation is representative of her entire modus operandi. Lissie is unapologetically who she is, because, as she has said herself, “I don’t really know what or why or who I am, but I don’t know how to not be how I am.” Lissie grew up in Rock Island, Illinois, aside the Mississippi River. After getting kicked out of high school and leaving Colorado State University when she had derived what she wanted from that experience, she moved to Los Angeles to try music full-time. To make money, Lissie sold honey at a farmer’s market—the perfect metaphor for what she now gives to the musical world. Lissie’s debut EP, Why You Runnin’, was produced by Fat Possum labelmate Bill Reynolds (of Band of Horses), and Lissie herself has been championed by Paste magazine. Lissie’s debut full-length, Catching a Tiger, dropped August 17th. TWEETS
