The best way to describe Lucero is to say that it’s what cowpunk sounds like when it grows up and gets a mortgage. Formed by singer Ben Nichols in the late 1990s, the Memphis-based band started out on country-rock Madjack, releasing two records there before migrating to the more rock-oriented Tiger Style for their 2003 release, That Much Further West. Then Tiger Style folded and Lucero’s ascendancy abruptly halted. The band regrouped and quietly released two more albums on its own label, Liberty & Lament. Finally, in late 2008, Lucero signed a four-album deal with Universal Music Group and released 1372 Overton Park in October 2009. The sound is gritty, gruff, and grateful, and guaranteed to inspire beer-flinging moshpits.
