Custom Maya Arulpragasam, aka M.I.A., is a bitingly original, fiercely creative British artist. Her Sri Lankan heritage, and particularly her father’s ties to the Tamil Tigers, greatly influences the music she writes; she pairs political and social commentary with catchy hip-hop beats packaged in sparkly, neon-colored cover art (and equally wild outfits). M.I.A. became an internet sensation in 2005 with the release of her debut, Arular. Named for her father, Arular was nominated for a Mercury Prize, and the single “Galang” was featured in a Honda commercial. For her follow-up, Kala (named after her mother), M.I.A. traveled to India, Jamaica, Australia and Japan when she could not get a work visa to record stateside.

When the Kala tune “Paper Planes” was featured in the Pineapple Express movie trailer, it became a breakout hit, and Kala went gold in the U.S. “Paper Planes” was nominated for a Grammy for Record of the Year in 2009, and rapper T.I’s Kanye West-produced “Swagga Like Us,” which samples the tune, was nominated for Best Rap Song. That same year, M.I.A. received an Academy Award nomination for her song “O...Saya,” which was featured in Slumdog Millionaire. Apart from attending myriad awards ceremonies and becoming a mother, M.I.A. has kept busy touring and founding her own label, N.E.E.T. Records, which has signed artists Rye Rye, Blaqstarr and indie breakouts Sleigh Bells. She’s also been back in the studio recording a new album, /\/\/\Y/\ (the typographic equivalent to her legal name), which will be released in the U.S. on June 29. Two songs have already been released, including the first official single, “XXXO,” and “Born Free.” The latter received graphic cinematic music video treatment from director Romain Gavras.

I love MIA music, it's the kind of beat you can try ballroom dancing to.

i must say that M.I.A. put on a great show, but the crowd was just LAME! No one around me was dancing and I was chastised for dancing and singing to her music. Many people around me didn't even know who she was. ACL's crowd is fairly lame considering most of them aren't from ATX.

She was TERRIBLE and didn't perform at all. I am a big fan and have enough music of hers on my iPod to listen while I run for a whole hour. I will never purchase another M.I.A. song again after this Saturday's so-called performance. There was rarely anyone on stage and she only "performed" one song. ACL: please don't invite her back. Everyone around me in the crowd was saying this was the worst ACL experience we've ever had. I agree with them!

To Ricbooth.I have a poster of M.I.A. and we have great nights together. Im going to check her out this year because I saw Muse a few yrs ago. This is her one chance to make me a fan like you are. She better put on a good show and not just act like a Lady Gagga puppet show. And lets thank the music gods Lady GaGa aint playin.

To atxjustin38, I'm sorry you think that this one artist is going to destroy your ACL experience. Variety is what makes ACL such a hit. And can you argue with over 12,000 people who have added this performance to their custom line-up? Hope you have a great time at the festival!

When a band like this is lined up for ACL fest it makes me question the $150 I paid for the ticket. Her music is crap. Who ever keeps picking her for this venue needs to be fired. This one artist takes away from the credibility of the whole festival.

I really like some of her songs but she is HORRIBLE live. Glow sticks are nice but the sound is nothing but sound effects going off way too much. Almost like I'm at a rap concert in the early 90s. LCD should have this slot!
