The maturity and introspection behind front man Andy Hull’s lyrics always seemed at odds with his young age; after all, Atlanta indie rockers Manchester Orchestra made their breakthrough while its members were barely legal. Still, through their first two full-length albums, 2006’s I’m Like a Virgin Losing a Child and last year’s Mean Everything to Nothing, the band has continued to evolve, adding raw and urgent rock to Hull’s poignant lyricism and coming-of-age tales. Paste magazine describes their progression well: “The young band has learned a great secret: It’s possible to make a massive, commercial, go-for-the-gusto Rock Record while still holding on to dark idiosyncrasies and seriousness of purpose.” TWEETS
