Mayer Hawthorne & The County
Detroit may be in need of economic salvation, but its music scene is alive and well. Michigan's own Andrew Mayer Cohen, a.k.a. Mayer Hawthorne, is proof. On his album, A Strange Arrangement, he embraces classic Motown and Stax sounds. Mayer's falsetto croons sweetly over relaxed bass lines and a warm and sonorant horn section—a variable group of musicians Hawthorne affectionately calls the County. Though he has relocated to California, his music retains the upbeat pop sensibility of his home state. His song, “When I Said Goodbye,” landed in the Spike Jonze short, We Were Once a Fairytale. Touring extensively in 2010, Mayer is turning heads and with his soulful lyrics and multi-instrumental skills, proving once again that if you love something, you have to strive to keep it alive. He earned spots at Bonnaroo, the Sasquatch Music Festival and Mile High Fest, and was a South By Southwest hit. For his performance at the Austin City Limits Festival, wear comfortable shoes, and prepare to keep your girlfriend at bay. TWEETS
