Midlake
Borne from a group of jazz students at the University of North Texas, Denton’s Midlake has come a long way from their original funk explorations, finding their own space in the world of lo-fi, pastoral rock. Lead singer Tim Smith writes compelling, reflective music inspired by artists like Radiohead and Jethro Tull. After issuing their first EP in 2001, the band caught the attention of Cocteau Twins bassist Simon Raymonde, who signed the group to his Bella Union label. They recorded their debut full-length album, Bamnan and Slivercork, in 2004, and followed up with The Trials of Van Occupanther two years later. The latter showed the band’s shift from its psychedelic leaning to more nostalgic, ’70s-inspired classic rock. Their third studio album, this year’s The Courage of Others, pays homage to the band’s love of late-’60s British folk acts, and fulfills the Dallas Observer’s declaration of “the most important record Denton's ever produced.” TWEETS
