Originally conceived and carried out as a college-era project by John Darnielle, the Mountain Goats have evolved from experimental, enigmatic boom-box recordings by a disaffected psychiatric nurse to a cohesive catalogue of indie-rock autobiographies about life with an abusive stepfather and being surrounded by meth heads. The now-three-piece is based in Durham, North Carolina and released its 16th album, The Life of the World to Come, which takes the Bible as its conceit—every song is named after a Bible verse, which provides context for the tune. Faith and its function in everyday life is not a new theme in Darnielle’s oeuvre; it’s his juxtaposition of faith and modernity, set against driving lo-fi rhythms and intensely empathic vocals, found in this project that makes it striking.
