The often-morphing Latino/funk/hip-hop/jazz amalgam known as Ozomatli has a rather infamous history with Austin, where they became a cause célèbre after two members and their manager were arrested in a misunderstanding during a performance at 2004’s South By Southwest Music & Media Conference. Though they copped “no contest” pleas instead of trying to fight it out in court, the band has since performed several times in Austin without incident. Mostly, they inspire a lot of moving bodies, particularly when they snake through the crowd in a conga line. Ozomatli came together as activists, and in 2007, the Grammy-winning band was invited to tour the world as cultural ambassadors for the U.S. State Department. They visited orphanages, refugee camps and, in Nepal, drew 14,000 people to the first concert played in that country by a Western band. Though Ozomatli has taped an Austin City Limits segment and appeared at Auditorium Shores, this is the band’s first Austin City Limits Festival performance.
