Richard Thompson
Revered as one of the top 20 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone (and in the company of Jimmy Page, Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, B.B. King and Jimi Hendrix), Richard Thompson is a musician’s musician, the kind of singer-songwriter who has influenced untold numbers of other incredible artists without becoming a household name himself.
Thompson was a founding member of the ’60s British folk-rock pioneers Fairport Convention. After departing from the band in the ’70s, Thompson continued on solo projects and collaborations. His music has been admired and recorded by artists like Robert Plant, Bonnie Raitt, David Byrne and Elvis Costello, and his work has been recognized with the Ivor Novello Award for Songwriting, a 2006 BBC Lifetime Achievement Award and the Orville Gibson guitar award. In 1991, Thompson was invited to the Guitar Greats celebration in Seville, Spain, as the special guest of Bob Dylan, a highlight for Dylan-admirer Thompson. In the new millennium, in addition to continuing new solo work, Thompson has recorded with Loudon Wainwright III, Rufus Wainwright, the Blind Boys of Alabama and Los Lobos as well as scoring Werner Herzog’s Sundance-beloved documentary Grizzly Man.
In 2010, he was named curator of London’s Meltdown Festival, and received the Mojo Les Paul award. His new CD is Dream Attic.
