Custom Like his college pal Lyle Lovett, Houston native Robert Earl Keen is among a breed of Texas songwriters known for their literate, vivid storytelling abilities—and their equal ability to rock audiences. It’s a fraternity that also includes Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Billy Joe Shaver. The highest major chart position Keen has reached is No. 10 on Billboard’s Country Albums chart, for 2001’s Gravitational Forces, but songs like “The Road Goes on Forever” and “Corpus Christi Bay” are icons of alternative country. Ely has made the former a signature song, and Todd Snider recorded a haunting version of the latter on his 2009 gem, The Excitement Plan. Snider and Keen performed it together during Bonnaroo ’09; Keen, incidentally, was the talk of Bonnaroo, partly for the rendition of Cream’s “White Room” he used as an attention-getting opening salvo. Like Snider, he’s got the ability to go from poignant to hilarious with the flip of a guitar pick. “Merry Christmas from the Family” is a classic description of dysfunctional holiday gatherings, and “Wireless in Heaven,” the closing track on Keen’s 2009 album, The Rose Hotel, will make you LOL.

Not gonna apologize for adding REK. If you've moved here from another state you should be required to pay your respects and see this guy.
