Robert Randolph & The Family Band
Nobody in the world plays pedal steel guitar like Robert Randolph. He’s a maniac—a stool-kicking, happy-footed, rubber-kneed virtuoso who did for that instrument what Jerry Lee Lewis did for the piano. But Randolph’s antics still involve praising the lord, in whose house (specifically, the Pentecostal House of God Church in Orange, N.J.) he first learned to play the style known as sacred steel. Randolph employs his cousins in the Family Band, and freely admits his pedal-steel passion saved him from the streets, though the streets certainly inform his funked-up, blues-powered sound, as do influences such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Sly Stone. One of Randolph’s early champions was Eric Clapton, who knows a little something about salvation; Clapton took Randolph out on tour, showcased him in the first Crossroads guitar festival in Dallas and appeared on Randolph’s 2006 album, Colorblind. Randolph’s latest, We Walk This Road, produced by Texan T Bone Burnett, has a June 22 release date—four days before he’ll perform at Clapton’s 2010 Crossroads fest. TWEETS
