Spoon
This year, the gods of Austin, Texas indie-rock Spoon are celebrating the release of their seventh studio album, Transference, the follow-up to universally acclaimed Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. On it, the quartet of Britt Daniel, Jim Eno, Eric Harvey and Rob Pope maintain the swagger they’ve rocked for the past 17 years, but indulge in roughing the edges a little, infusing the songs with fresh punch. In support of Transference, Spoon has been touring the country, mixing up sets of old and new material, with it all sounding equally tight. The band is at their best when lead singer and Spoon mastermind Daniel’s voice cracks with emotion, exploding on individual words he practically spits out. These are the moments that epitomize rock ‘n’ roll, infused with the same youthful angst Daniel, as a modern Peter Pan, has seemed to encapsulate throughout the group’s musical career. Perhaps this is due, in part, to the incomprehensible fact that, despite soundtracking the Will Ferrell film Stranger Than Fiction, racking up hit singles like “The Underdog,” “Don’t You Evah” and “You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb” on their last record and earning the respect and admiration of countless contemporaries, Spoon still seems, to a degree, like an under-the-radar band. Superstars or not, what is certain is this: Spoon will make you wanna strut, if you give ‘em the chance.
