Like Maceo Parker, Trombone Shorty is an all-over-the-map artist who’s equally at home with funk, soul, jazz, rock and hip-hop¬—and his own mélange of all those styles, which he likes to call “supafunkrock.” His new album, Backatown, is a reference to the Tremé neighborhood in New Orleans, where Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews was born and raised. He got his nickname when he was 4, marching in a parade and playing a trombone twice his size. He also plays trumpet and a variety of other instruments (in that town, who doesn’t?), and has a lot of cool friends, including Allen Toussaint, Marc Broussard, Lenny Kravitz and other giants with Louisiana addresses. Andrews is, in fact, an alum of Kravitz’s band, which he joined at 18. Bono and the Edge discovered him gigging in a club when he was 12.
